| Continuous improvement is the process of not accepting the status quo... |
| It is recognizing that things change. Given this reality the challenge is to look for ways of improving to make the organization more competitive. The focus is on the internal capabilities and capacities of the organization. Any changes being contemplated must keep in mind the impact they will have on the customer and whether the change aids in differentiating the company from its competitors in a positive manner. |
| Each company needs to continuously review the level and type of investment required by maintenance to fully realize the value of the organization’s assets. The maintenance department must do its best to monitor a changing environment so that its maintenance strategy remains effective and not obsolete. The strategy deployed to maintain an asset must fit with the environmental conditions and economics surrounding the asset. |

| The best tool available to a maintenance department for continuous improvement is benchmarking. The process of comparing performance against either another company or prior year’s accomplishment means that measures are being taken. Something that is measured is something that can be managed. Maintenance can be cost effective. |
